Police cordon off ‘militant hideout’ in N’ganj

Police have cordoned off a four-storey building in Barpa area of Rupganj upazila in Narayanganj district suspecting it to be a militant hideout.

A team of Anti-Terrorism Unit (ATU) of police surrounded the building on Tuesday morning, said Additional Superintendent of Narayanganj Police, Habibur Rahman.

However, no drive has been conducted yet, he said.

Confirming the matter, Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police of Narayanganj, Habibur Rahman, said: “During the raid in a room on the third floor of the building, three bombs, four machetes, and two extremist books were recovered. The bombs have been defused.

“No one was found in the room, but efforts are ongoing to identify who rented and lived in the room. ATU members are still present at the scene, and a case will be filed regarding this incident,” he added.

Earlier in the day, starting at 10am, ATU and law enforcement officers cordoned off the building owned by Saudi expatriate Zakir Miah in the Borpa area of Rupganj. The raid was conducted in the afternoon.

Regarding the operation, ATU Superintendent of Police (Operations) Mohammad Sanaowar Hossain said: “On June 5, a terrorist was arrested in Narsingdi with a rifle.

Based on the information obtained from him, we discovered a terrorist base in Netrokona. Later, on June 8-9, we conducted an operation there and found out it was an Ansar al-Islam training camp. No one was found during the raid.
