Teachers, intellectuals, freedom fighters and cultural activists called upon all to contain the spirit of resistance of historic March, 1971 and building united resistance against anti-liberation evil forces.
“What is happening currently is the conflict between free thinking and fanaticism. It is a conspiracy against free thinking by those who use religion. It is not possible for the government alone to face this conspiracy,” historian Prof. Dr. Muntasir Mamun told BSS on Thursday.
He urged the civil society and cultural activists to be united and build resistance in their respective areas. Likewise, the political parties believing in free thinking would have to forge resistance against fanaticism, he added.
Eminent personalities like Ekattorer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee President Shahriar Kabir, freedom fighter Habibul Alam Birprotik and Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy Director General and drama personality Liakat Ali Lucky believe that facing the two-month-long blockade and current hartal and violence of the BNP-led 20-party alliance is not the responsibility of the government alone.
They think, all would have to build united resistance with the same social, cultural and human values, with which the Bangalees had fought and won the Language Movement of 1952 and the Liberation War of 1971.
Prof. Muntasir Mamun stressed the need for creating awareness among the people along with the practice of free thinking to uproot religious fundamentalism from society. ‘Religious fundamentalism’ is a matter of ideology and it is not possible for a government to change an ideology, he added.
Shahriar Kabir said the current violence is part of a far-reaching conspiracy of Jamaat-e-Islami. This party had opposed the liberation of Bangladesh in 1971 and now they are plotting to avenge their defeat at that time, he added.
“The politics of Jamaat-e-Islami is to destroy the BNP and try to turn Bangladesh into a monolithic Muslim terrorist state,” he observed.
He said the BNP and its chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia are implementing the agenda of Jamaat-e-Islami and they are making their opponent the whole Bangladesh to save the war criminals of 1971.
Shahriar Kabir urged the government to take effective initiatives to wage a united movement with the people of all strata and professions against fundamentalism.
Valiant freedom fighter Habibul Alam called upon all to discharge their respective duties to build resistance against fundamentalism and communalism.
Liakat Ali Lucky suggested uniting all social, cultural, political and professional bodies to forge concerted resistance against the evil forces.
