Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Secretary Khorsheda Yasmeen stated on Monday that there is no external pressure influencing the investigation of alleged corruption involving former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed and former National Board of Revenue (NBR) official Matiur Rahman.
“The ACC is an independent institution. There is no pressure coming from any direction. We are working according to the law. As other work is underway as per the legal process, the ACC’s work won’t be disrupted either,” Yasmeen told reporters at
a press briefing. Earlier on Monday, despite being given a second opportunity to appear before the ACC, Zeeshan Mirza, Benazir’s wife, and their two daughters did not show up for questioning. Benazir Ahmed also failed to appear before the ACC on Sunday, June 23. Following this, the ACC secretary indicated that the commission would now pursue further legal action against the former police chief.
At the briefing, Yasmeen noted that Benazir’s wife and daughters did not appear for interrogation on Monday, nor did they request an extension. However, they did provide a written statement explaining their position on the complaint, which accompanied Benazir’s application last Thursday, June 20.
The ACC secretary mentioned that the relevant investigation officers would take further action after reviewing the statement submitted by Benazir’s wife and daughters. “Further action will be taken as per the ACC’s rules,” she said, adding that the investigation officers will submit their report within the stipulated time.
When asked about the potential legal actions that could be taken, Yasmeen explained that the commission would decide the next steps based on the recommendations of the investigation officers and other legal processes. “The action taken will be based on the officials’ report and according to legal procedures,” she concluded.
