Barishal city roads choked with garbage, public health at risk

The citizens in different areas of Barishal City Corporation (BCC) are suffering from hygienic and public nuisances crisis due to the lack of coordination between the officers and field level workers for cleaning garbage.
Their indifference has led to piling garbage at different points of the city creating dissatisfaction among the common people over the cleanliness drive. The citizen sources said that the people of the city have to suffer due to the stench spreading from the garbage for a long time at various designated places (dumping spots) on the road. The situation is such that moving around those roads has become a liability.
Enayet Hossain Chowdhury, Coordinator of Barishal Nagorik Parishad, said that after evening, people cannot walk through different dumping spots on the road due to the smell. There is no cleanliness. It will be difficult to keep the city clean with a weak sanitation department. Yusuf Ali, the officer cleaning section of BCC, said that committees have been formed to monitor the work of workers in 30 wards. In fact, the mayor asked to know how the cleaning work of the city is being done, how much it has benefited the city residents.
Lakitullah Sikder, chief assistant of the administrative branch and member of the monitoring committee of BCC City Corporation (BCC), said an 8-member committee was formed on Thursday (June 6) to supervise cleaning activities in 30 wards of the city.
In this regard, BCC public relations officer Ahsan Uddin Rumel said, public awareness has been created by miking several times regarding placing construction materials on the road. Even then, action will be taken if obstruction is done.
It is reported that the committee found irregularities in the cleaning work of the city on the first day of inspection on June 8, 2024 Saturday.The monitoring committee has called a meeting about this Sunday June 9, 2024
From 9:00 PM Friday to 1:00 a.m Saturday, several irregularities are found in depositing garbage in different areas of the city. It has been seen that garbage is lying in Ward No. 22-23 from Hatim Ali College Chowmatha to B M College, C and B, Sagordi areas of the city. Residents have complained that even the garbage piled in front of the BM College campus area. Dumping of garbage like this cannot happen in such important areas.
He acknowledged that BCC cannot have such a shortage of cleanliness. It has been found that on the road opposite to Shahid Alamgir hostel of Hatem Ali College on Nabogram Road in the city, garbage is piled up in front of TTC, Education Board, BM College, Oxford Mission School till late night.
Meanwhile, most of the drain slabs in Chaumatha area of the city have been stolen and those footpaths have become dangerous for pedestrians. In front of Hatim Ali College, the construction materials of a building have been left occupying the road for a long time, causing severe disruption to the movement of pedestrians.
The mosque is next to the garbage dumping spot opposite the Alamgir hostel, the worshipers complain that they have to suffer while coming to the mosque due to this dirt.
Enamul Haque Bahar, councilor of ward number 23 of the city, said, there are 16 thousand voters in our ward. But there is not even a dustbin to carry out cleaning activities. At least 10 dustbins are required. Cleaning staff is also very less.
