In presenting the proposed budget for FY2024–25, Finance Minister Mahmood Ali highlighted the government’s ongoing efforts to develop a modern and sustainable highway network, aligning with the vision outlined in the Perspective Plan 2041 to transform Bangladesh into a developed nation.

The minister further added that the government is also taking significant measures to enhance the safety and efficiency of the nation’s waterways. These efforts aim to make the riverine transportation system more passenger-friendly, modern, and secure, thereby strengthening both internal and international shipping routes.

Additionally, various projects have been initiated to modernise air transport services to meet global standards. These projects focus on improving the safety of aircraft take-offs and landings by upgrading runways and taxiways at several airports across the country.

“Considering the importance of the country’s trade, commerce, and supply systems, I propose an allocation of Tk 80,498 crore for FY2024–25,” announced the Finance Minister during his budget speech.

The Minister emphasised the planning and implementation of modernising motor vehicle management, including the introduction of high-speed public transport systems such as the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) and Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) to alleviate traffic congestion in Dhaka metropolis.

As part of this comprehensive communication network development, 1,439 bridges have been constructed or reconstructed on various highways. This has resulted in a well-developed highway infrastructure spanning 22,476 km, ensuring smooth and uninterrupted transportation of goods and passengers.

The Finance Minister reported that 851.62 km of national highways have been upgraded to four lanes or more under various completed and ongoing projects. Future plans include constructing 12 motorways and 10 additional elevated motorways by 2041.

In a recent milestone, the Prime Minister inaugurated 100 bridges across 25 districts in seven divisions, totaling 5,494 metres in length. Additionally, 100 highways have been developed in 50 districts across eight divisions.

To tackle traffic congestion and improve the urban environment, a robust network of six Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) lines is being developed under the Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL).
