Govt to widen allowance coverage for Hijra, Vede

Finance Minister AH Mahmood Ali in his budget speech on Thursday proposed to widen coverage for socially marginalized groups, including the Vede and Hijra communities, under its Social Safety Net programme.
In his budget speech for fiscal year 2024-25 (FY25) in Jatiya Sangsad, Ali said the government has a plan to widen the coverage of this support to a total of 12,629 people in the next fiscal year from the existing 6,880 from Hijra community to increase their living standards, reports BSS.
“Besides this, the government will continue to provide allowances for the Vede community,’ he said, adding that in the upcoming fiscal year, a total of 9,832 individuals from other socially backward groups will be brought under the coverage of allowances.
Education stipends programmes for all marginalized communities, including Hijra and Vede, will continue to extend educational opportunities to them, he added.
