Today is the 55th death anniversary of legendary journalist Tofazzal Hossain Manik Mia.
Fearless journalist Manik Miah is the founder of modern newspapers. He was the founding Editor of the daily Ittefaq, and also the founder of The New Nation.

He was one of the proponents of the Bengali nationalist movement.

His columns “Rajnaitik Mancha”, “Rajnaitik Dhonkabaji” and “Ranga Mancha” relentlessly exposed irregularities and dishonesty in the society as well in the country.

Manik Mia and his Ittefaq were literally engaged in a relentless pen-war to expose public opinion for the establishment of democracy and the realisation of the equal rights of the people of this land.

His scathing writings, under the pseudonym ‘Mosafir’, Manik Mia portrayed thoughts of the masses in simple
language and acted as a catalyst in connecting the masses with the political leadership of like Maulana Bhasani, Sher-e-Bangla A. K Fazlul Huq, Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the mass struggle. For this, Manik Mia had been repeatedly imprisoned like a political leader.

On this day in 1969, at the age of 56, the short-lived renowned journalist breathed his last in Rawalpindi, then West Pakistan.
Manik Mia was born in 1911 in Bhandaria of Pirojpur district. His father’s name is Muslim Uddin Mia.
Several political parties and social organisations including Jatiya Party-JP, have taken various programmes on the commemoration of Manik Mia.
