Some 13 shops were fully and 3 others were partially gutted when a devastating fire broke out in Polerhat village market within Daibnjahati Union under Morrelganj Upazila in Bagerhat district at Thursday night at about 12-30 pm, according to a delayed report received here. The causes behind the fire could not be ascertained till the writing of this report.
It is learnt from the affected shop-keepers that at the night at about 12 pm one of the night guards of the Bazar found that a small part of the market caught the fire and the night guard declared the matter through the mike of the Bazar mosque repeatedly. On hearing the matter shop-keepers and the locals rushed the spot and found the fire. Then the shop-keepers, locals and police members of the local police outpost (Fari) tried to extinguish the fire but in vain. By this time 2 fire service units- one from Morrelganj and the other from Kachua rushed to the spot and brought the fire under control after a long fighting for long fighting for one and half an hours. In spite of that as many as 13 shops with their all belongings were burn to ashes and 3 others were burnt partially.
According to the Fire Service, the fire was, perhaps, originated from an electricity short-circuit. On the other hand, the loss of fir is over Tk.25 Lakh as per a primary assessment.
