The government has suspended Dhaka District Registrar Wahidul Islam, currently incarcerated on corruption charges. The Law and Justice Division issued a notice on May 12, following the actions of the Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Court, which, on April 30, recognized the charge sheet submitted by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) and subsequently detained Wahidul Islam.

The Law Ministry’s notification elaborates that the ACC Dhaka-1 filed a corruption case against Wahidul Islam on September 21, 2023. The charge sheet was finalized on January 9, leading to his arrest and jail detention on April 30. In accordance with subsection 2 of section 39 of the Public Service Act, 2018, his suspension was effective from the date of his detention.

While suspended, Wahidul will be assigned to the Directorate of Registration, receiving a food allowance and other benefits stipulated by regulations.

The ACC’s allegations against Wahidul include the concealment of wealth information and illegal acquisition of assets beyond his disclosed income. He is accused of misrepresenting assets amounting to Tk 94 lakh 50 thousand and unlawfully possessing assets worth Tk 1 crore 21 lakh 55 thousand 649, which are inconsistent with his lawful income.

Public Prosecutor Rezaul Karim reported that following the investigation, the ACC presented the charge sheet against Wahidul. On April 30, Wahidul appeared before the court to request bail but was denied and ordered to remain in custody, according to the prosecutor.
