A gas pipe ruptured during construction work on Sunday in Shashangaon, Narayanganj, sparking a fire that engulfed nine shops and forced the closure of around 100 factories in the Fatullah BSCIC Industrial Area.
The fire erupted on Pagla-Munshiganj Road in front of BSCIC after the gas line broke. Firefighters arrived promptly with six units and extinguished the blaze within half an hour. Thankfully, no casualties were reported.
Local residents informed authorities that the fire prompted the closure of at least 100 factories in the nearby industrial area.
Fakhruddin, Deputy Director of Narayanganj Fire Service, confirmed the incident. He added that investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of the gas line rupture.
The fire department also informed residents that gas supply in the area has been temporarily suspended to facilitate repairs on the damaged pipeline. Service is expected to resume once the work is completed.
Deputy Director Fakhruddin further elaborated that the high gas pressure caused flames to reach up to 30 feet, severely damaging several shops with tin roofs along the road.
Meanwhile, Abdul Hye, station officer of BSCIC fire station, said, “Construction work is underway on the road in front of BSCIC. A fire broke out as a result of a gas pipe rupturing beneath the road during excavation.
“The intensity of the gas pressure caused the flames to rise approximately 30 feet high. Several tin shed shops along the road were damaged in the fire.”
He said upon receiving information, six firefighting units rushed to the spot and brought the fire under control.
“Currently, the gas connection has been suspended throughout the entire area for pipe renovation work. Once it’s complete, the gas line will be restored,” he added.
Fakhruddin, deputy director of Narayanganj Fire Service, said there were no casualties in the fire.
“We are currently investigating the cause of the fire,” he said. Engineer Mamunur Rashid, deputy general manager of Titas Fatullah zone, said the renovation work is expected to be completed by 11:00pm, after which gas connections will be reinstated.
