The Election Commission (EC) has issued directives for the transfer of Noakhali Subarnachar Thana Office-in-Charge (OC) in anticipation of the upcoming upazila parish polls.
EC’s deputy secretary, Md. Mizanur Rahman, dispatched a notice to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) on Sunday, signalling the decision.
The notice stipulates that with the aim of ensuring the sixth upazila polls are conducted in a free, fair, and neutral manner, the EC has opted to withdraw Noakhali Subarnachar Thana OC, Rafiqual Islam, and Assistant Sub-inspector Nur Nabi. The EC further instructed the authorities concerned to appoint eligible officers to these positions.
“This time, the EC is set to conduct 476 upazila parishad polls out of 495 in four phases,” as per the notice. The remaining 19 upazila parish elections will be held later, as their tenure has not yet expired.
According to the EC’s announced schedule, the first phase will witness 150 upazila parish elections on May 8, followed by 160 polls in the second phase on May 21, 112 polls in the third phase on May 29, and finally, 55 polls in the fourth phase on June 5.
