The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DB) has arrested three members of a gang that manipulated the stock market by spreading false information to various groups through social media.

The information was given by DB chief Mohammad Haroon Or Rashid in a press conference at the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) media centre on Saturday (April 27).

The Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested three members of an organised gang involved in manipulating the stock market by spreading false information on social media and online on Friday.

DB Chief Additional Commissioner Mohammad Harun-or-Rashid confirmed this at a press conference at the DMP Media Centre on Saturday noon.

The arrestees have been identified as Amir Hossain, alias Nurnurani, 37; Nurul Haque Harun, 52; and Abdul Kaiyum, 39.

DB Chief said a team of Cyber and Special Crime (South) of DB, led by Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Saifur Rahman Azad, arrested them in separate drives from different areas of the capital.

Earlier, the Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC) filed a case with the Ramna Police Station alleging that an organized gang with vested interests had been influencing investors with fake information for a long time.

After the investigation detectives arrested the accused from parts of the capital city, the DB chief said, adding that the arrestees maintained various secret groups on social platforms including Facebook, Whatsapp, and Telegram to spread false and misleading information.

Besides, the arrestees often extorted money from the listed companies. If the companies refused to pay the money, the accused began online propaganda against those companies and even attacked the companies’ offices, DB officials added.
