A human chain was formed demanding an end to plastic pollution on Char Chapli Islamia Secondary School premises of Kalapara upazila under Patuakhali district on Monday. Dharitri Rakshae Amara (Dhara), Waterkeepers Bangladesh, Amara Kalaparabasi, Kuakata Tour Guide, Kuakata Tarun Club and Kuakata Boys Club jointly organized this programme.
Kalapara representative of Water Keepers Bangladesh Kamal Hasan Roni said, indiscriminate killing of trees, destruction of forest land, expansion of factories, emission of other harmful gases including greenhouse gas, pollution of soil, water, air due to use of harmful chemicals, increase in global temperature, melting of ice in polar regions, loss of biodiversity.
Besides being, the life of plants, animals and microorganisms is in crisis, Roni said. Gazi Ali Ahmed, head teacher of Char Chapli Islamia Secondary School, said that due to overuse of plastic, people are suffering from many deadly diseases including cancer.
Similarly, this plastic is one of the causes of environmental pollution along with river channel filling threatening human civilization. Sothey are calling for strict implementation of polythene ban law, Gazi Ali Ahmed added.
Dholai Market Fishermen Association President Obaidul Hasan said that 22 million pounds of plastic waste is thrown into the sea in a year.
Plastic waste is already a threat in terms of pollution. It tops all as a single pollutant when it comes to ocean pollution. Due to this, fish cultivation has fallen, Obaidul added.
