Today, Bangladesh stands ready to commemorate its 54th Independence and National Day in a manner befitting the sacrifices and struggles of its people.

President Mohammed Shahabuddin and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina are scheduled to deliver separate messages this afternoon, setting the tone for the day’s events.

The celebrations will kick off with the reverberating sound of gun salutes early in the morning, paying homage to the indomitable spirit of the nation that endured years of foreign rule until achieving independence in 1971.

Around the country, the national flag will be hoisted atop government, semi-government, autonomous, and private buildings at sunrise, while streets and intersections will be adorned with national flags and colourful festoons. Important landmarks and thoroughfares will shimmer with vibrant lights, reflecting the festive spirit engulfing the nation.

The focal point of the day’s festivities will be the National Martyrs’ Memorial at Savar, where President Mohammed Shahabuddin and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, alongside people from all walks of life, will lay wreaths in honour of the martyrs who made the ultimate sacrifice for the country’s freedom.

As a mark of respect, Bangladesh observes a public holiday today, allowing citizens to participate in various events and activities arranged nationwide.

Special supplements in national dailies, along with month-long programmes on television and radio channels, will revisit the Liberation War and underscore the significance of this historic day.

Cultural and educational institutions such as Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, Bangla Academy, and the Liberation War Museum will host discussions, cultural performances, and sports competitions. Meanwhile, cinemas will screen documentaries and movies depicting the struggles and triumphs of the Liberation War.
