Pak High Commission celebrates Republic Day

The High Commission of Pakistan to Bangladesh celebrated the National Day of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan at Le Meridien Hotel in capital Dhaka on Saturday.

Minister for Planning Major General (Retd) Abdus Salam attended the reception as the chief guest. Earlier, Pakistan High Commissioner Syed Ahmed Maroof spoke on the occasion.

Ambassadors and high commissioners of different countries based in Dhaka, senior government officials, leaders of different political parties, including the ruling Awami League and main opposition BNP, representatives of different social organisations and Pakistani nationals living here in the capital largely attended the reception.

Speaking on the occasion Planning Minister Abdus Salam paid tributes to Bangabandhu Skeikh Mujibur Rahman marking his 104 birth anniversary and National Children Day, highlighting the leadership Bangabandhu gave to the nation. Finally, the country got liberated at the supreme sacrifice of three million people in 1971.

The minister also said how the daughter of Bangabandhu, Sheikh Hasina, has been giving dynamic leadership to the nation for the last 15 years. The country is massively progressing and has become one of the economic powers in the world.

She was again elected for the fourth time to power in a peaceful and largely attended election held on January 7.

Earlier, the High Commissioner, Syed Ahmed Maroof, highlighting the significance of the Day said that the 23 March marks a momentous day in our history.

It was on this day in 1940 that the Muslims of the Sub-Continent passed the historic ‘Pakistan Resolution’ and demanded a separate homeland where they could freely live their own way of life according to the principles of Islam.

On this day in 1940, at a conference in Lahore, Muhammad Ali Jinnah called for a separate Muslim state.

The Lahore Resolution was passed by the working committee of the All-India Muslim League, led by Mr Jinnah.
