UNB, Dhaka :

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Thursday asked police personnel to prepare themselves to contain the new patterns of crimes amid the technological advancement.

“As technology advances, crimes occur in different ways. New patterns of crime are emerging. Our police force should be prepared to tackle these in all possible ways,” she said.

The premier was addressing the high officers of Bangladesh Police at her office in the city amid the Police Week 2024.

This year the six-day police week with the theme ‘Smart police smart country, Bangladesh of peace and progress,’ is being observed from February 27 to March 3.

The prime minister said the government is paying attention sincerely to deal with the emerging patterns of offenses. If the system is not upgraded to deal with offense with the change of crime patterns, these can’t be controlled, she said.

She asked the police members to serve the people irrespective of men, women and children with utmost sincerity, considering them as dear and near ones in any working place.

Noting that the police have now become friends of the people, the head of government said nowadays people don’t get scared (of police) as was the case in the past.

“Now they (the people) have regained their trust and the common people consider the police as their friend and a place of trust,” said Hasina.

The prime minister asked the police personnel to stay steadfast and play an appropriate role if necessary in preventing the recurrence of the attacks on police and violence to protect lives and assets.

Noting the incidents such as arson, killing the police, throwing the police into the fire, she said the cases filed in the incidents should be disposed of without any delay.

“I think if the prosecution and punishment of those who commit such crimes are done quickly, then they will not dare to do it again,” she said.

In the future no one should be allowed to commit crimes such as attack on the police, take the law into their own hands or deteriorate law and order, and harm people’s lives and damage the public assets in the name of politics, she added.

“So, the police will have to be steadfast and play the role whenever necessary in this regard,” said PM Hasina.
