Some 139 Bangladeshis who were in various detention camps in Tripoli and Benghazi in Libya, returned home by a chartered flight on Thursday morning.
Foreign Ministry said that these individuals had been detained in various detention centers located in the cities of Tripoli and Benghazi, facing challenging circumstances.
Foreign Ministry’s Spokesperson Seheli Sabrin said, “Today a total of 139 Bangladeshis who become irregular in Libya have returned home. So far 1245 Bangladeshi individuals from different detention centres have been returned.”
The successful repatriation was made possible through the combined efforts of the Bangladesh Embassy in Tripoli and the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
The collaborative initiative aimed to bring back Bangladeshis who had found themselves stranded in different detention centers, highlighting the precarious conditions faced by migrants in Libya.
Upon their arrival at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, the repatriated Bangladeshis were warmly welcomed by a team from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the IMO.
As a gesture of support, each individual received pocket money amounting to Tk 6,000, along with essential food items.
Mustafa Jamil Khan, Director (Welfare) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, greeted the returnees and encouraged them to share their harrowing experiences in Libya with their neighbors and relatives. Khan emphasized the need for caution against spending money or falling into the traps of brokers, stressing the importance of legal and safe migration.
The director underscored the significance of raising awareness about the risks associated with irregular migration, highlighting the potential dangers and challenges faced by individuals who choose unlawful means to travel abroad.
Mustafa Jamil Khan, Director (Welfare) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, greeted the returnees and advised them to share their harrowing experiences in Libya with their neighbours and relatives.
He urged everyone to be cautious against spending money or falling into the traps of brokers to travel abroad illegally.
Khan emphasised the importance of raising awareness about the risks associated with irregular migration.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, along with the Bangladesh Embassy in Libya and the IMO, has been working relentlessly to ensure the safe repatriation of Bangladeshi nationals stranded in various detention centers in Libya.
The returnees are encouraged to engage in discussions with their neighbors and close ones about their experiences in Libya, especially in detention centers, to raise awareness about the dangers of irregular migration.
