A mortar shell fired from Myanmar territory has landed inside Bangladesh at Bandarban’s Tumbru border area, causing widespread panic among locals.
The shell landed at around 12:30pm on Wednesday (Jan 31) but no casualty was reported, Ghumdhum Union Parishad Chairman Md Jahangir Aziz confirmed the matter to the media.
After the incident, Bandarban’s deputy commissioner, police chief, Naikhongchhari upazila executive officer as well as senior Border Guard Bangladesh officers have visited the site.
Five primary schools were shut down in the Ghumdhum and Tumbru border areas on Monday (Jan 29) for security reasons. Tumbru resident and Ghumdhum UP member Mohammad Bhuttu said there had been firing along the border on Tuesday as well.
Intense fighting has been going on near the Bangladesh-Myanmar border in Naikhongchhari for around 10 days.
