10 killed in separate road mishaps

At least 10 persons, including four BCL leaders in Sylhet,have been killed and 30 others injured in separate road accidents in five districts across the country.

In Sylhet, at least four activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) were killed after a private car fell into a roadside pond in Banglabazar areaon the Sylhet-Jaflong highway under Jaintiapur upazila of Sylhet on Friday night.

The deceased were identified as Jubayer Ahsan, 24, son of Jahurul Miah; Nihal Pal, 25, son of Ranadip Pal; Tamal, 25, son of Arju Miah; and Sumon Ahmed, 25, son of Harun Miah, from Nijpat union of the upazila. They were very close friends.

According to locals, the private car fell into the roadside ditch when the driver lost control over the steering on Friday night, leaving them seriously injured, officer-in-Charge (OC) of Jaintapur Model Thana Golam Dastagir Ahmad, said.

Later, the locals rescued the seriously injured from the private car and sent them to the Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, where the on-duty doctors declared them dead.

The bodies were kept at MAG Osmani Medical College and Hospital morgue for post-mortem, he said.

General Secretary of Sylhet District Chhatra League Rahel Siraj claimed that all the victims were leaders and workers of Bangladesh Chhatra League.

In Bandarban, a jeep, with a group of female tourists on-board, has plunged into a hillside ditch on the Ruma-Boga Lake-Keokradong road, leaving two dead and 11 injured.

They were returning from Keokradong after enjoying charming beauty of the hill under the arrangement of an orgainsation called Narir Chokhe Bishwo. Two of the injured are in a critical condition in the hospital now.

The deceased have been identified as Feroza Begum, 53, and Jaynab Khatun, 24, a student of criminology department, University of Dhaka.

Syed Mahbubul Haque, upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) of Ruma upazila, confirmed the matter to the media. He said the jeep fell into a 500-meter-deep ditch after the driver lost his control over the steering.

There were 13 tourists in total in the jeep. The injured are – Rafan, Ushoshi Nag, Joba Roy Nag, Mahfuza Islam, Amena Begum, Tahmina Tanjim Talukder, Tannim, Rizvi, Anjuman Haque, Itu, and Shorna.

Members of the fire service and the army rescued the victims and took them to the upazila health complex in Ruma. The driver has been at large since the incident.

In Pabna, two people were killed and several others injured in a head-on collision between a passenger bus and a microbus at Ishwardi upazila in Pabna district on Saturday morning.

The incident took place around 8.00am on the Dashuria-Kushtia highway in Mirkamari Purbopara area of the upazila.

The deceased were identified as Amit Kundu, 40, son of one Surat Kumar, a resident of Radhanagar area under Pabna municipality, and Nasim, 45, son of one Abdur Rauf of Sheikhpara village under Ishwardi upazila.

Pakshi Highway Police outpost in-charge Ashish Kumar Sanal said a passenger bus of SN Paribahan was heading towards Ishwardi from Kushtia. On the other hand, a microbus from Dashuria was going towards Kushtia.

On the way, the both vehicles collided head-on, leaving 10 passengers of the microbus, including the duo, critically injured.

Locals rescued and took them to Pabna General Hospital where duty doctors declared them dead, he added.

In Dhaka, a motorcyclist was killed when a covered van hit him behind in Jatrabari area of the capital on Saturday.
However, the victim’s identity is not yet known.

The accident took place on the road behind Jatrabari police station at around 11 am. Jatrabari police station sub-inspector (SI) Iqbal Hossain confirmed this information.

In Gazipur,a bus driver’s assistant was killed when a truck rammed a passenger bus from the back in Goalbathan area of Kaliakair upazila of the district.

The accident took place on the Dhaka-Tangail highway near the Kharajora bridge on Saturday (January 20) at noon.

The victim was identified as Habib (22), son of one Shamsul Mia of Baropakhia Paharpur area of Tangail’s Delduar police station.
