The project director of Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant Construction and prominent nuclear scientist Md Shawkat Akbar has been appointed as chairman of Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission on Thursday.
Earlier, he was appointed as a member (physical science) of the commission through a separate notification before appointing him as the chairman, said a press release.
Shawkat Akbar was the founding managing director of Nuclear Power Plant Company Bangladesh Ltd.
In his illustrious career of more than 25 years, Shawkat has outstanding contribution in the fields of nuclear power and energy, nuclear engineering, project management.
He has obtained first class at Honours and Master’s degree in Physics from Dhaka University (DU). He holds a doctorate degree in electrical engineering from Hokkaido Institute of Technology, Japan.
Shawkat Akbar holds the distinction of becoming the youngest head of department at BEAC by taking charge of Non-Primary Explosive Detonator at the age of 35.
While working in the commission’s nuclear safety and radiation control division and NPED, he got the opportunity to work with famous nuclear scientists MA Wazed Mia, professor Naeem Chowdhury and CS Karim.
