Art Director Shihab’s 15yr journey in film industry

Shihab Nurun Nabi, a name synonymous with artistic excellence in the Bangladeshi film industry, has recently been honoured with the prestigious National Film Award 2021 for Best Art Direction. This accolade celebrates his exceptional work in the film “Nona Joler Kabbo,” marking a significant milestone in his 15-year career, said a press release.
Nabi, a veteran in art direction, has played a pivotal role in shaping the visual aesthetics of various projects, including nearly 500 TV commercials, multiple films, and OTT projects. His artistic touch is evident in popular works such as “Mohanagar,” “Rickshaw Girl,” “Shonibar Bikel,” “Ei Muhurte (Kolpana)”, “Youtumer” and “Sincerely yours, Dhaka.” Most recently, his creative expertise was showcased in Coke Studio Bangla season 2, enchanting audiences with visually stunning interpretations of songs. This year, he has also been honoured with the BABISAS Award and the Bangladesh Achievers Award.
In an interview, Nabi explained, “Art direction is about materializing the creative visions of directors and producers on screen.” His perspective highlights the evolution of the Bangladeshi film industry, which now recognizes and credits the crucial contributions of art directors, a practice that was rare two decades ago.
Nabi’s recent work with Coke Studio Bangla illustrates his innovative approach. He described the challenge of constructing and dismantling new sets daily, a task accomplished in mere hours thanks to his team’s efforts. His designs, inspired by ararete’s musical visions, blend folk and modern elements, adding a distinct Bangladeshi essence to each production.
As Nabi continues to leave his mark on the industry, his achievements not only celebrate his journey but also signal a bright future for art direction in Bangladesh. His work serves as an inspiration to aspiring art directors and a reminder of the profound impact visual storytelling can have on cinematic experiences.
