Commentary: Though Awami League politics is extremely inhuman, it needs US help

– Mainul Hosein :

The most cardinal principle for our educated people should be that they must not remain asleep and indifferent while the state machinery is perverted for building an alternative method of hijacking the people’s election process as a whole to make the claim of wholesale election victory easier.

The government is trying their hardest best to make revenge politics as the only alternative politics.

The politics is thus criminalised. The people are left with no option but to suffer injustices more and more in anger till it bursts open disrupting orderly governance.

It cannot be anybody’s business, let alone the educated people.

At this stage of democracy, a political leader’s ability to govern honestly goes through various open challenges.

In Bangladesh blind faith in hereditary name is sufficient, though the demand of time requires great knowledge and heavy experience to negotiate on what is the best possible for the people.

Adamantly defying the international offer of a window of opportunity by making its own 1972 democratic Constitution a mockery of democracy, the ruling AL government has invented an absurd political definition of free and fair election unacceptable internationally.

Even in our neighbouring India, the largest democracy in the world, no such ridiculous idea is available.

It is by protecting and using talented men and women, the political leadership builds a country great.

The government has paid no attention to that national need. The talented people cannot be expected to join street politics like politicians.

Finding no safe abode in Bangladesh they are looking for opportunities abroad to help other countries to make good use of their talent. That has made our nation disgraced and shameful.

When the government denies their own constitutional way of holding free and fair election peacefully, violence remains the only way to fight for the people’s legitimate right to have free and fair election against the government.

That is how politics has become a cycle of violence between the government and the people.

Thus the innocent people are double victims of violence from the police as well as from the Awami League’s own private armed ‘bahini’.

I believe in the existence of peace and justice in the corner of every political leader however bad and absurd one is, and how anxiously I have been waiting for that movement.

But that has not happened so far, as politicians remained busy for their own success and ignored improving the quality of our common people to live in peace and well being.

Not being dependent on the people’s vote, the political leaders seek bureaucratic brain-dead ideas of construction projects as pillars of dazzling success. The lives of the general public remain unconcerned.

They suffered deprivation and police brutalities. The public servants are rewarded for their cooperation in their anti-people activities.

It is the bureaucrats who write out the success stories of the politicians.

The grievances of the general public are limitless and there is no control over law and order or safety of general people’s lives.

It is to be admitted as a reality on the ground that the government’s preparation for suppressing the opposition with gun power has stunned the nation.

The country is in a sunken state in terms of economic and other development pursuits imperative for constructive activities for healthy growth of a successful country.

Not only the law and order has broken down beyond the control of the political leadership of the government.

The people are simmering in frustration reaching the overflowing point of violence now being demonstrated by the people.

The government’s political leadership is of no help. The big corruption is also in support of election victory no matter possible or not.

My personal belief that there exists in every politician, however cruel or incompetent he or she is, a corner of goodwill for the general public and that is what gives me hope for a better future, which is dignified and honourable.

But the government urgently needs international cooperation, especially that of the USA, to bring back sanity to our national politics sliding down to anarchy.
