Be the people’s government by holding people’s election and be free from fear – Mainul Hosein

The incumbent government in Bangladesh expressed its fear that America wants to remove it from power. But it is not for us or others to know which foreign government wants to change the government.

What we all know is that, to avoid violence, there is an international pressure over this government to hold free and fair election to have a people’s government. Any well meaning foreign government can legitimately desire our government to hold free and fair election so that people in Bangladesh can form their own government.
The sensible persons in the Awami League government should be aware that how the party was misled by lies since the birth of Bangladesh to make it change its democratic legacy and its pro-people strength. It is sad that the same Awami League is now fearful of the people and amended the Constitution to survive through election robbery which is known to all.

It should be enough to find out who the fantastic borrowers of banks are and who laundered unbelievably huge amounts of money to various countries? It is these people who are resisting free and election in their self interest.
The lies and stealing the people’s election and money cannot be the right basis for a safe and good government.

This government amended the constitutional provision purposefully for not holding election under a non-party-caretaker government.
Why is it not possible now to have a people’s government by holding free and fair election under a caretaker government as before? The government itself made the constitutional amendment to deny the people election-time neutral caretaker government. Blaming others will not change the truth.

The government amended the Constitution to deny election to be held under a caretaker government as was agreed before by all the political parties in the parliament.
That constitutional provision was changed to require the election to be held under their own sitting government and it has now become easy for the government to continue in power through election robbery.

Before blaming the others, the government should be honest about their mischievous deeds to remain in power. When a government remains in power not as elected by the people it is fair for anybody to suspect that the government is not of the people but of others. It is not wrong for any foreign government to express its desire for holding free and fair election under a caretaker government as was mandatory before the constitutional amendment made by the present government.

More importantly, it is the demand of the opposition political parties and the citizens as a whole to have free and fair election. But in short, the government has been committing fraud on the Constitution and the people as it is not being elected by the people. Can this call itself the people’s government?

If the present government is not depending on the support of its own people then it is not wrong to ask the question: Whose government it is? Such suspicion should be dispelled peacefully and not by state terrorism of false police cases and secret killings or forced disappearances which might lead to a civil war.

We have been asking all concerned including the opposition parties to shun the path of violence against their own people.

Let us live peacefully allowing the people’s government elected by the people under an election-time caretaker government and thus democracy to survive. What everybody sees as dangerous is the conspiracy against the people.
