The water in Kaptai Lake has come down to ‘dangerous’ level. Due to lack of water, there is a fear of stopping production at Karnaphuli water power plant. The center has 5 units fully operational for power generation but only one unit is currently running.
Due to the lack of water, power generation is facing extreme uncertainty. At the same time, boat traffic with 6 upazilas of Rangamati district is about to be stopped.
Karnaphuli Hydropower Plant Manager Engineer ATM Abduzzah admitted that there is less water in Kaptai Lake and said that according to the rule curve ( water measurement ) now ( yesterday ) there should be 78 water in Kaptai Lake . 45 feet mean sea level. But at this moment there is water in the lake 69 . 02 feet mean sea level. Stating that the water in the lake has reduced to a dangerous level, the manager said ,All our units are now fully ready for power generation. But due to low water in Kaptai Lake, electricity is being generated by keeping one unit running. And although this 1 unit has a capacity of 42 megawatts of electricity production, only 25 megawatts is being produced. As a result, power generation is in dire straits.
Meanwhile, a large part of Kaptai Lake is currently dry due to lack of water. Currently there is no water under the Kaptai Rangamati Asambasti road bridge.
Other parts of the lake have also dried up. Communication by river is almost stopped.
