Largest ship in country’s history arrives in Matarbari Port

The Panamanian flag ship named ‘OWUSU MARU’ has arrived at Matarbari Port with 63 thousand tonnes of coal from Indonesia.
It is 229 metres long, draft 12.5
metres. It is the biggest ship in the history of Bangladesh and also the first ship to bring coal for the
coal-fired power plant.
On Tuesday, around 3:30pm, the ship was brought to the jetty of Matarbari Coal Power Plant.
The pilotage team while bringing the vessel from outer anchorage included Port Member (Harbor and Marine) Commodore Fazlor Rahman, Deputy Conservator Captain Faridul Alam, Captain Zaheer, Main Pilot Captain Kamrul and Co Pilot Captain Shams. Earlier on Monday at 7:30pm, the ship arrived at outer anchorage.
According to sources, no ship with a length of 229 metres and a draft of 12.5 metres has arrived in the country before.
The ship is brought to the jetty through an artificial channel 14.3 kilometres long and 350 metres wide from the sea.
Meanwhile, 112 ships had arrived at the jetty, but they had materials for power plant construction.
Chairman of Chattogram Port Authority, Rear Admiral M Shahjahan said that the largest ship in the history of the country has arrived in Matarbari. He said, “Panama flagged MV ‘Auso Maro’ with a length of 229 meters and a draft of 12.5 metres has arrived in Matarbari. It is a milestone in the history of the port. Before this, such a large and deep ship has not arrived in the country.”
