Japan keen to expand trade in Chattogram

Mayor of Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) Rezaul Karim Chowdhury has sought Japan’s cooperation in increasing investment and employment through the development of the Port City’s infrastructure sector.
During a courtesy meeting with the Ambassador of Japan Iwama Kiminori (Iwama Kiminori) at CCC office at Tiger Pass on Monday, the Mayor said that Chattogram is historically famous as a port and trading city. The Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has made huge investments in various sectors including the construction of tunnels to increase the capacity of the port to exploit this trade potential of Chattogram.
In particular, the Prime Minister has allocated two and a half thousand crores of projects for the development of the Port City.
“Through this project, advanced communication system is being developed in Chattogram which will make Chattogram the commercial hub of the world. I want Japan to support this development,” he said.
Assuring the CCC Mayor, the Japanese Ambassador said that along with JICA, Japanese commercial companies are contributing to the development of Chattogram’s infrastructure by investing in the private-public partnership model. This trend will continue in the future.
Expressing Japan’s interest in expanding trade in Bangladesh, the Ambassador said, “There are many Japanese companies investing in Chattogram EPZ and Bangabandhu Industrial City in Mirsarai. Now, 20 major industrial groups, including one of Japan’s largest corporations, Nippon Steel, are conducting commercial activities in Chattogram, and many more are interested in investing. This investment can increase manifold if we get enough support.”
