Students and doctors including Chattogram Eye Hospital’s Managing Trustee Prof Dr Rabiul Hossain took part at a rally, which was brought out by Chattogram Eye Hospital on Tuesday. Chattogram Eye Hospital and Training Centre is marking ‘World Glaucoma Week-2023’ on March 14 with a rally, which was inaugurated by the Managing Trustee of the hospital, Professor Dr Rabiul Hossain. During participating in the rally, Dr Rabiul told media that the second cause of blindness worldwide is the fatal vision disease glaucoma. A large population has never heard of glaucoma. Even 50 per cent of people do not know they have glaucoma. Most glaucoma patients are unaware of their presence, especially since there are no symptoms. It destroys the nervous system from within like a fire of chaff. Most glaucoma patients present near blindness.
The founding chairman of Imperial Hospital, Prof Rabiul Hossain said, “Glaucoma is such a complex eye disease, vision gradually decreases. At one point the patient was even forced to go blind. Timely treatment can prevent blindness. Glaucoma often occurs due to hereditary reasons. Glaucoma can be controlled; but it cannot be cured. Glaucoma can be controlled by following a well-controlled lifestyle and regular ophthalmologist consultation, as can diabetics and high blood pressure patients.”
Stating that it is possible to avoid blindness if the disease is diagnosed and treated at an early stage, he also said, “We need to create awareness about glaucoma. He also called upon the expert doctors to play a role in glaucoma.”
