CUSC to cooperate in protecting Karnaphuli, Halda rivers; no lease, construction there: NRPC

The leaders of Greater Chattogram Development Struggle Standing Committee exchanged views with Chairman of the National River Protection Commission Dr Manzoor Ahmad Chowdhury. He exchanged views at the Circuit House of Port City yesterday.
Jasim Uddin Chowdhury, President of the Greater Chattogram Unyan Sangam Standing Committee and Chairman of The Purbokone Ltd, said that the Greater Chattogram Unnyan Sangram Committee has been struggling for a long time to protect the Karnaphuli River.
Following this, a memorandum has been given to Chattogram District Commissioner recently. The Greater Chattogram Development Struggle Committee will cooperate in all ways to re-occupy and depollute the Karnaphuli and Halda rivers. Greater Chattogram Development Struggle Standing Committee to protect the Karnaphuli River will continue to cooperate with the National River Protection Commission as before.
SM Nurul Haque, Vice President of Greater Chattogram Development Struggle Standing Committee, said that if the navigability of the Karnaphuli River can be increased through dredging, large ships will be able to flow there. Besides, the river should be made polythene free anyway.
Measures should be taken to prevent dumping of waste in rivers and waste should be made suitable for use through recycling.
Chairman of the National River Protection Commission Manzoor Ahmad Chowdhury said that no lease or construction can be done in the place of the river class. Where the river is damaged, the River Protection Commission will intervene. Karnaphuli River is not only the wealth of Chattogram but the whole country.
It is the life line of the country. “I will work with the people of Chittagong to protect this resource.” Therefore, the cooperation of the Greater Chattogram Development Struggle Committee is needed in this regard.
He assured to take necessary measures to protect Karnaphuli.
