Chattogram Bureau :
Exporters have stopped the export of vegetables through Chattogram
Shah Amanat International Airport for an indefinite period. The exporters have announced the suspension of all vegetable export activities from Tuesday, complaining of
‘harassment’ by Assistant Commissioner Zainal Abedin, who is in charge of the customs unit of the airport. Exporters export about 15 tons of vegetables to different countries
of the Middle East through Chattogram Airport.
The market value of which is about Tk32 lakh.
When asked, General Secretary of Chattogram Fresh Fruits Vegetables and Allied Products Exporters Association Forkan Uddin Rubel told the media, “Vegetables have been exported through Chattogram Shah Amanat International Airport for several years. Before export of vegetables, bill of entry has to be done from commercial bank. After that, in the presence of civil aviation, aviation authority, customs authority, aviation security department officials of various departments concerned, the quantity and cartons of exported vegetables are determined and a separate charge is levied. In this case, even though there is a pre-booking of the exported goods in the aircraft, in many cases at the beginning of the journey, the airline authorities reduce the amount of exported goods. At this time, the export products have to be divided into several planes to reach the specific destination. This rule has been in place for a long time in the case of exporting vegetables through the airport.”
