wife of late journalist Chanchal Mahmud, who died on December 3, 2021 in coronavirus. Chanchal Mahmud was also a singer but he accepted journalism as his profession due to survival. Once Shilpy was a singer but after passing 25 years of their conjugal life, she didn’t see to continue music.
The singer informed that in 1984, Shilpy secured the first position at Islamic Foundation to render Islamic song of Kazi Nazrul Islam. Therefore, she won top positions for 10 times in music competitions. She learnt music from Sadeka Khatun and her sister Yasmin. Her school’s headmaster Shahadat Hossain beard all expenses for running music and childhood friend Dulal Khan also inspired her to continue music. She has two daughters named Sushmita and Moumita. They learned music from their father. They got primary lessons in music from him. They learned classical music and Nazrul Sangeet with the interest from their father. Moumita had most fascination about music. Around 12 years ago, Sushmita contested in Sherakontho, while Moumita took part in the contest of music reality show, ‘Close up 1.’ Meanwhile, Moumita also got the chance to participate in Kolkata’s music related reality show ‘SaReGaMaPa.’ But due to visa related complications, she couldn’t attend the contest.
Moumita said that she always feels comfortable to render songs of Ustad Niaz Mohammad Chowdhury. Sushmita secured the third position at Samsung Super Contest. Sushmita has most concentration to her academic study. For this reason, she could not go far away with music.
On the other hand, Moumita received training in classical music from Ustad Hrishikesh of Lucknow, India. For the last three years, she has been learning Eastern music from Anup Kumar Singh. She secured the first position in Western Music at Sunsilk Divas Contest in 2019, Moumita said.
She also said, “I like to render songs. For this reason, I have already received training in classical music. I am receiving training in Eastern music now. I believe one day my dreams will come into true with music.”
Mother of Sushmita and Moumita, Shilpy Mahmud told this correspondent, “Basically Sushmita is now working as a woman entrepreneur. But I want she will continue music. Moumita is more serious in music rather than other activities. Sometimes, I want to render songs.”
Sushmita told this correspondent, “Now I am busy with three things – ‘Aporanho Surjo,’ ‘Sushmita’s Gallery’ and ‘Shilpy’s Kitchen.”
