If you expect ethical behaviour in Bangladesh politics then you are seriously wrong in your expectation. No civilized norms are followed here. To the utter surprise of the saner section of people in society, for the last several weeks, owners of transports have been calling general strikes of transports at the time of the opposition BNP’s planned schedule of rallies in divisional cities. Our opposition parties are not knowledgeable about government activities against the opposition. How much money is spent for arranging transport strikes is not considered worth knowing. They are well compensated for the loss the owners suffer. It is not the truth to say the owners are pro-Awami League that is why they create difficulties for the people to attend public meetings. Our politics is a money making struggle and fear public gatherings. Politics is now for uneducated thieves of election and public money. It is unfortunate that our so-called political parties are not the domain of educated honest people.
Apparently, as these transport owners say that their strike programme is for pressing home their demand of removing locally produced nasimons, korimons, bhatbhati and battery-run easy-bikes from the highways. But the truth is different. By doing this, the ruling party wants to create obstacles for the BNP activists or people in general from the districts and upazilas around so that they cannot join the rallies and make the congregation a success.
The ruling AL wants to show that people are not opposing the government, but the opposition is hiring them to come to the meetings.
If Awami League has any honesty left why should not its leaders explain the reason for the election robbery by them and why not ready to face election without hanging on power.
Despite their efforts, BNP activists and common people attended the meetings, arriving at the meeting venues using modes of transport including boats, motorcycles, rickshaw-vans, bicycles, etc. Many joined the rallies from distant places on foot.
Keep aside the debate whether there could be more people in the BNP programmes if there was no strike, the fact is common people suffer a lot due to the transport strike every time. They could not commute during their emergencies.
The ruling party does not care who are suffering for their illogical step, since it has been in power without people’s votes, and as it transpires, still it does not need their votes. Had that been the case, while calling a transport ban, it would have thought about people’s sufferings.
However, still more surprising is the fact that as the BNP is going to hold its protest programme in Faridpur today (Saturday), the state-owned BRTC also has also joined the strike. According to a report of a national daily, BRTC authorities at Faridpur said they would keep their operations suspended expressing solidarity with the private operators’ demand for banning the unauthorized three-wheelers from the highway. A state organization, BRTC, is going against the state or government. It also bothers little about its duty of serving the people.
Such vile tactics of the government only prove the fact how fearful the government is of the people.
