Researchers of SAU invent RAS technique for low-cost fish production

The researchers of the Aquaculture department, faculty of fisheries of Shen-e-Bangla Agricultural University invented a low-cost Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS) technique in Bangladesh. The research developed locally engineered cost-effective RAS in Bangladesh for the intensification and mechanization of aquaculture.
Professor DR. A.M. Shahabuddin head of the research team said that, the RAS technique can help to increase fish Production by 80-100 times more than traditional fish Production. This technique can ensure bio-safety for fish cultivation. He further added that, the equipment needed for the RAS technique can be produced locally at half of the cost compare to the imported fish equipment. The research team also used solar running pumps and solar electricity to lower the fish production cost.
Professor Dr. Shahidur Rashid Bhuiyan, Vice Chancellor of SAU said that, to ensure food safety application of modern technology is much needed. He further said that to make Bangladesh’s fish Sector sustainable there needed new technology to lower the cost of fish Production and hand over these innovative technologies to fish farmers. The research project was funded by Krishi Gobeshona Foundation (KGF) and in collaboration with Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute ( BARI).
