NSU observes the ‘Sheikh Russel Day’ 2022

The first private university and the number one ranked private university of Bangladesh, North South University (NSU) observed the ‘Sheikh Russel Day’ 2022 by celebrating the 59th Birth Anniversary of Sheikh Russel, the youngest son of our beloved Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
To mark the occasion NSU arranged various programs on 18th October 2022 (Tuesday) to celebrate ‘Sheikh Russel Day’ 2022. NSU Earth Club organized a ‘Tree Plantation Program’ at NSU Playground. All guests and students paid homage to the ‘Portrait of Sheikh Russel’ at the stage of NSU Plaza. A Discussion Session was also held to celebrate ‘Sheikh Russel Day’ 2022.
Sheikh Russel, the youngest brother of Honorable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, was born on October 18 in 1964 at the historic Bangabandhu Bhaban at Dhanmondi. Sheikh Russel was brutally killed on August 15 in 1975 along with most of his family members, including his father Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Freedom Fighter Lt. Col. Quazi Sajjad Ali Zahir (Retd.) Bir Protik was present as the Chief Guest. Professor Dr. Sharif Uddin Ahmed. Dept. of History & Philosophy, NSU was present as the Keynote Speaker. Ms. Yasmin Kamal, Member, Board of Trustees, NSU was present as the Guest of Honor. Professor Atiqul Islam, Vice-Chancellor of North South University chaired the event. The program was moderated by Mr. Jamil Ahmed, TV Presenter & Director – Public Relations Office at North South University (NSU).
Freedom Fighter Lt. Col. Quazi Sajjad Ali Zahir (Retd.) Bir Protik said, “We need to know the biography of Sheikh Russel so that we can know about the history of conspiracies in this country. At this time, he said to the young generation, let us awaken the consciousness and awaken our sleeping soul and face history. The history that is the history of Bangabandhu, the history of the martyrdom of his family members, the history of genocide, the history of infanticide. We need to preserve all our history and we need to come forwards to build a better country together.”
Professor Dr. Sharif Uddin Ahmed said, “I thank the Government of Bangladesh for celebrating today as a National Day. By studying Sheikh Russel’s biography, our young generation can learn how to be a gentleman, how to love our country and how to prepare themselves, etc. Teaching them that history is the main purpose of observing this day.”
Vice-Chancellor, Professor Atiqul Islam said, “In the history of the world, there is a history of killing heads of state in many countries for power, but the history of killing him and all his family members is rare in the world. Over-devotion is not always good as we can learn from history. We need to know all these histories. I think by celebrating Sheikh Russel Day we can learn the history of our country, learn about Bangabandhu and we can build a beautiful country together.”
Among others, Prof. Dr. M. Ismail Hossain, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Ahmed Tazmeen, Registrar, Prof. Dr. Helal Ahammad, Dean, School of Business & Economics, Prof. Dr. Abdur Rob Khan, Dean, School of Humanities & Social Sciences, Prof. Dr. Javed Bari, Dean, School of Engineering & Physical Sciences, Prof. Dr. Hasan Mahmud Reza, Dean, School of Health & Life Sciences, Faculties, Directors of various departments, Department Heads, senior officials and a large number of students were present at the program.
