News Desk :
Allegations have surfaced against convict Md Rafiqul Amin, managing director of multilevel marketing company Destiny 2000 Limited, of holding business meeting inside prison cell.
Rafiqul has been undergoing treatment at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital (BSMMU) after he was admitted there from Dhaka Central Jail about two months ago due to deterioration of his diabetes.
A video clip regarding his meetings on zoom platform sitting inside the BSMMU prison cell are now in circulation on social media. The video of more than one hour in length shows that Rafiqul Amin gives directives others attending the meeting.
It is learnt that the BSMMU authorities are going to form an inquiry committee on Saturday to investigate the matter.
Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan said they have learnt about the matter. “If any zoom meeting was conducted sitting inside the prison cell, it was a grave crime.
Even those who assisted Rafiqul Amin to hold the meeting also committed a grave crime,” he said.
Those who attended the zoom meetings with Rafiqul Amin included Solaiman Miaji, Abdul Halim, Mostaque Ahmed, Muslehuddin Badsha, Kafiluddin, Sultan Mahmud, Mohammad Helal and Manzurul Huque. The video shows that addressing the participants, Rafiqul Amin asks them to appoint agents at all police stations in the country.
He also assured them of bringing huge amount of money from abroad. A shareholder will be able to earn Tk 1,800 dividend by purchasing a share of Tk 100.
Rafiqul Amin has been in jail for more than eight years in graft cases filed by Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). The court in a judgement several years also said he might get bail if he deposited Tk 2,800 crore of the clients.
Contacted, BSMMU vice-chancellor Sharfuddin Ahmed said on Thursday that he directed proctor Habibur Rahman to probe the matter.
Proctor Habibur Rahman said Rafiqul Amin was not supposed to hold any mobile phone. “In spite of it, we’ll look into the matter. We’ll form a three-member inquiry committee on Saturday. Action will be taken as per the recommendations of the committee,” he said.
There are allegations that the Destiny 2000 Limited officials misappropriated Tk 4,118 crore from common people. Two cases were filed against 53 persons including Rafiqul Amin eight years ago under Money Laundering Act. However, recording of the testimonies in both cases has not been completed yet.
