Cattle sales up as supply marks rise

Staff Reporter :Sales of sacrificial animals gain momentum following huge supplies of cattle at numerous makeshift cattle markets, including Gabtoli permanent cattle market, on Saturday.Activities at cattle markets cheered up following arrival of huge numbers of potential buyers on the day, only a day ahead of Eid-ul-Azha.  During spot visit to some cattle markets, it was found that cattle traders were happy with their sales in higher rates. But buyers claimed that traders were charging high. “Cattle prices were reasonable at Gabtoli market due to their plenty of supply,” Monir Hossain, a potential buyer told The New Nation yesterday at the cattle market. He said, a good number of Indian cattle and local cattle flooded the market keeping their rates reasonable. Some camels and dumbas are being displayed at Gabtoli market. Camel prices are between Tk 4 lakh and Tk 7 lakh while dumbas are between Tk 2 lakh and Tk 5 lakh.Large goats are being sold at Tk 15,000 to Tk 20,000, medium size at Tk 10,000 to Tk 13,000 while a small one at Tk 5,000 to Tk 8,000 at different markets.Big size bulls are being sold at Tk 75,000 to Tk 1 lakh and medium ones at Tk 55,000 to Tk 70,000 while small size bulls are being sold between Tk 30,000 and Tk 40,000.However, traders at makeshift cattle markets in Khilkhet, Agargaon, Banani Railway Station, Postogola, Dhupkhola, Brothers Union Club in Gopibagh, Rahmatganj and Meradia areas are quite happy with the rise of cattle prices.Enamul, who come to Gopibagh cattle market from Kushtia with 20 cows on Thursday night said, he sold 10 animals but with little profits.”I didn’t make much profit after selling the first 10 cattle, but I will sell another 10 cows with higher profits till Sunday evening.”Alamgir Hossain, manager of Gopibagh cattle market, said trading of sacrificial animals gained momentum at fair price with smooth supply of cattle at the market.”Huge numbers of buyers gathered at the market on Saturday while the traders sold hundreds of cattle,” he added.Both traders and buyers at the market said demand for small and medium-size cattle is higher at cattle markets.
