115 tons of concrete blocks instead of 538 tons iron scrap detected in Ctg Port

115 tons concrete block has arrived at Chattogram port instead of declared 538 tons iron scrap from a UAE port .. Chattogram Customs House authorities have seized 20 containers of the consignment to check whether the exporter tried to smuggle Tk 1.45 crore or cheated with the Bangladeshi importer.
According to Custom House sources, a letter of credit (LC) was opened at Rupali Bank Limited’s Dilkusha branch for importing 538 tons of scrap from the UAE in the name of Sakura Steel Limited of Mainamati Bazar, Comilla . The value of the product in the LC was 1 lakh 61 thousand 574 US dollars which is equivalentto tk. 1 crore 45 lakh .
Under the LC, 20 containers arrived at port on April 21 from Jabel Ali port of UAE with MV Smiley Lady ship declared as scrap raw materials for the steel industry. Containers are sent to CCTCL Depot (Private Offdock) for quick delivery as these are industrial raw materials.
The importer has not taken any action for a long time to unload the goods. The importer also did not submit any documents to the authorities for clearing the consignment.
On the basis of secret information, the audit, investigation and research (AIR) team of Chattogram Custom House took the initiative for physical inventory of consignment.
After inventry very recently, instead of 538 tons of scrap, 115 tons of low-cost concrete blocks were found by opening the container, asstt. commissioner, CCH told the medias.The anti-money laundering unit of Chattogram Custom House will investigate whether there was an attempt to money laundering of Tk 1.45 crore in the consignment or whether the exporter had cheated with the importer.
