Cumilla Warriors win a thriller in BBPL

Cumilla Warriors earned a thrilling two-wicket win over Chattogram Challengers in their Twenty20 cricket match of the Bangabandhu Bangladesh Premier League (BBPL) at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in the city’s Mirpur on Tuesday.
Chasing Chattogram’s fighting total of 159 for the loss of six wickets in 20 overs, Cumilla Warriors reached the winning target in the last ball of the 20th over scoring 161 for the loss of eight wickets.
Cumilla had a good start as openers Robiul Islam and S yan Zyl put on together 30 runs in the opening stand before Zyl was caught by Nasum Ahmed off Liam Plunkett.
After Zyl’s dismissal, Dawid Malan and Robiul Islam contributed together 31 runs for the second wicket partnership before Robiul Islam (17) was bowled out by Mehedi Hasan Rana when Cumilla’s total was 61 for the loss of two wickets.
Malan hit a captain’s knock of 74. His 51-ball innings was laced with four sixes and five fours. Malan was adjudged the Man of the Match for his outstanding performance.
After Robiul’s departure, Soumya Sarkar came at the crease but his innings was short-lived as he (6) was caught by Mehedi Hasan Rana off Ziaur Rahman when Cumilla’s score was 70 for the loss of three wickets.
Then Malan and Sabbir Rahman added together 64 runs for the fourth wicket partnership before Sabbir Rahman (18) was caught by Liam Plunkett off Ryan Burl when Cumilla’s total was 134 for the loss of four wickets.
After Sabbir’s departure, Cumilla batsmen failed to build any notable partnership.
Malan alone fought back before he was run out by joint-effort of Lendl Simmons and wicketkeeper Nurul Hasan when Cumilla’s total was 157 for the loss of seven wickets just one ball before Cumilla’s innings.
Opener Zyl made 22 from 12 balls featuring four fours.
Rubel Hossain of Chattogram Challengers bagged two wickets for 16 runs, while Burl, Mehedi Hasan Rana, Ziaur Rahman and Liam Plunkett took one wicket apiece.
Earlier, Chattogram Challengers made a formidable start as openers Lendl Simmons and Junaid Siddique put up 103 runs in the opening stand.
Lendl Simmons hammered a superb 54. His 34-ball knock was studded with five fours and two sixes.
Junaid Siddique made 45 from 37 balls including six fours.
