Mobile court drive to continue: Huge onions pouring in Chattogram markets

The onion market of the port city flooded with huge imported onions recently following the crisis of Indian onions.
Thousand hundreds metric tons of imported Onion from Myanmar pouring in the Chattogram wholesale markets of Khatungonj and Chaktai.
The onions from china , Myanmar already coming the market in the meantime. A wholesale market sources said about 8000 metric tons of onion imported within the span of 5 days ,from September 27 to October 02 last. The prices of the Indian and Myanmar onions come down by Tk.10 to 15 taka per kg . The Myanmar onion is being sold at Tk. 60 per kg. Mentionable that following the ban of export of onion by Indian authority, the prices of onions in the country goes up alarmingly from September 29 last. In the meantime, Onions were sold up to Tk.120 per kg in retail market and after arrivals of imported onion from Myanmar and the deployment of mobile court in Chattogram wholesale market, the prices come down by 30 to 40 percent less . The onions from Egypt expected to reach Chattogram port by today or tomorrow. Houndreds of onion laden trucks reached in Chattogram market yesterday night, a n importer told . A sources from Teknaf told this correspondent that a trade team of Ministry of commerce led by its Joint secretary staying at Teknaf to observe the supply and delivery of onion from Teknaf land port . Local legislator of Teknaf is watching the situation there round the clock. Sources said about 1000 metric tons of onion in a number of trawler waiting at Naf river aimed at unloading at Teknaf port .
Meanwhile mobile court of Chattogram district administration launched a drive on the wholesale market of onions in Khatunganj. The operation, which was conducted on Tuesday, was led by the Executive Magistrates Touhidul Islam and Md Ashraful Alam. Out Raozan correspondent Habibur Rahman said UNO of Raozan upazila Jonaid Kabir Sohag conducted mobile court in principal Poura Market -Fakirhat in the morning on Wednesday and a number of traders were fined for selling onion with high prices and penalty Tk.17000 realised from traders.
During the drive, the authority investigated on the buying and selling price of Ms Haji Asiuddin Shawdagor, Ms Shahjalal Traders, Bagdadi Corporation, Khaja Traders and SN Traders of Khatunganj onion wholesale market. Executive Magistrate Md Touhidul Islam said that onions were being sold at Khatunganj at a much higher price than the purchase price of onions from different countries including Myanmar.
Some of Myanmar’s onions were bought at Tk 42 but sold for Tk 75-80. While buying some onions from India at Tk 42 to 60 last month, they are now selling at Tk 90.to 100.
The court has fined Khaja Traders Tk 10,000 for over pricing of onions. After The drive, onions traders started selling onions at Tk 65-80 by the standards of onions, which was Tk 80-100 on Monday.”On the first day, we warned onion traders,” he said.
