The farmers are expecting a bumper output of the spicy crop of ginger after exceeding its fixed farming target during this Kharip-1 season in all five districts of Rangpur agriculture region.
Officials of the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) said farmers are expanding cultivation of ginger and other spicy crops every year after getting trainings, inputs and easy-term agriculture loans from the government in recent times.
“The DAE is conducting motivational activities to inspire farmers to increase cultivation ginger and other spicy crops to enhance production adopting latest technologies,” said Deputy Director of the DAE at its regional office here Agriculturist Md. Moniruzzaman recently. Under the spicy crop farming programme, the DAE had fixed a target of bringing 3,197 hectares of land under ginger cultivation to produce 41,625 tonnes of ginger this season for the agriculture region.
“The framers have finally cultivated the spicy crop on 3,254 hectares of land, 1.78 percent higher than the fixed farming target in Rangpur, Gaibandha, Kurigram, Lalmonirhat and Nilphamari districts of the region,” Moniruzzaman added.
The farmers have cultivated ginger on 1,195 hectares of land in Rangpur, 235 hectares in Gaibandha, 403 hectares in Kurigram, 365 hectares of land in Lalmonirhat and 1,056 hectares of land in Nilphamari districts of the region.
Talking to BSS, farmers Mizanur Rahman, Abdul Malek and Shariful Islam of different villages in Haridebpur union in Rangpur Sadar upazila said they have already stared harvesting their cultivated ginger from last week.
Farmers Awal Hossain, Mostafizar Rahman and Dulal Hossain of Botlagari union and Manik Sarker and Bipul Chandra of Ramnagar union of Nilphamari districts said they are expecting bumper ginger output this season. “We are selling newly harvested ginger during this Kharip-1 season at better rates between Taka 150 and Taka 170 per kg to the local zinger traders this season,” said farmer Echhahaq Ali of village Kathihara in Sadar upazila of Rangpur.
Vegetable traders Hafizur Rahman at Rangpur City Bazar Market and Fazlur Rahman at Keranipara Kitchen Market in Rangpur city said they are selling ginger produced during the last Rabi season at rates between Tk 280 and Tk 300 per kg now.
“The newly harvested ginger during this Kharip-1 season is being sold at rates between Taka 180 and Taka 200 per kg in local markets,” said vegetable trader Amenur Rahman at Syedpur Kitchen Market in Nilphamari district.
Additional Director of the DAE for Rangpur region Agriculturist Muhammad Ali said the DAE and other agriculture related departments and organizations and commercial banks have been implementing special initiatives to increase production of spicy crops.
Agriculturist Ali also predicted a bumper production of ginger cultivated during this Kharip-1 season in the region.
