Prices of almost all essential commodities, especially of onion, garlic, ginger and other spices have suddenly shot up in Bagerhat district town and in the rural markets, causing untold sufferings to the people in general and the commoners in particular.
Onion, a must item for Bengali kitchen has shot up Tk15 or more by per kg. It is now being sold here at Tk35 to Tk45 per kg according to qualities as against of Tk18 to Tk24 per kg previously. When contacted a local wholesaler of onions told this correspondent, the locally produced onions cannot meet up the requirement of the country. So, we are to import the from India. But due to the sudden increase of the price of onion in India and consequently, its price has increased in the local markets. Price of garlic which is also regarded as an important ingredient of the kitchen has shot up Tk50 per kg. It is now being sold here at Tk.130 or more per kg according to qualities as against of Tk80 to Tk90 per kg. Ginger is selling here at Tk180 or more per kg according to qualities instead of Tk60 to Tk80 per kg. Prices of all other species are also high.
Price of eggs produced in farms was so long within the reach of the common people. But suddenly the price of farm produced eggs has shot up. At present farm produced eggs are now being sold in the local markets at Tk36 to Tk38 per haly of four as against of Tk24 only a few days ago. Following the rise of price of farm produced eggs price of eggs of ducks and home produced poultry-eggs has also registered high. Both eggs of ducks and local poultry are now being sold in the district markets at Tk48 instead of Tk40 in the last week. Due to the prevailing high prices of fish, meat and poultry birds common people who used to take eggs produced in farms as their substitute were now thrown into an utter distress.
Prices of all kinds of vegetables are now abnormally in the local markets.
Green chili, regarded as one of the most items for Bengali kitchen, has registered high. The commodity is now being sold in the local markets at Tk200 or more per kg as against of Tk60 to Tk80 previously. Usche/Karolla is selling here at Tk60 per kg as against of Tk30 to Tk35. Kachur Gati, one kind of very small sized arums, is selling here at Tk50 per kg. Green banana is selling here at Tk40 to Tk80 per haly of four instead of Tk20 to Tk40. Comparatively the price of potato, one of the most popular vegetable item is comparatively low. It is now being sold here at Tk20 per kg.
It was earlier mentioned that the price of all kinds of fishes are high in the district markets. Small sized hilsa is selling here at Tk500 to Tk 800 per kg according to different sizes while the hilsa of standard sized, if available, is selling at Tk
1500 to Tk5000 according to sizes. Patari (Koral) is a popular fish of the localities. It is now being sold here at Tk700 to Tk1500 or more per kg as against of Tk300 to Tk700 previously. Ruhit is selling in the local markets at Tk300 to Tk600 or more per kg. Comparatively price of Koi fish cultivated in farms is chief. It is selling here atTk250 to Tk500 per kg according to different sizes.
Beef is selling here at Tk500 to or more per kg. It is alleged that in some cases flesh of buffalo is sold in the markets in the name of beef. Mutton is selling here at Tk600 per kg. But quality mutton is hardly available in the local markets.
Broiler is sold here at Tk150 per kg instead of Tk110 while the broiler crock is at Tk.200 or more per kg. Red mother poultry is now being sold here at Tk.250 per kg as against of Tk200 previously while white mother poultry is selling at Tk.220 or more per kg. Local poultry is selling Tk350 to Tk400 per kg. But in many cases Sonali poultry bird is being sold here at Tk300 or more in the name of local poultry, it is alleged.
But the price of all kinds of rice is same as before.
