Campaign reaches peak in Rangpur Divn

Poll campaigns reached its peak yesterday in 32 out of the total 33 constituencies of Rangpur division as just few hours are away to end the campaign.
Meanwhile, the Election Commission has rescheduled polling in Gaibandha-3 (Sadullapur-Polashbari) constituency for January 27 following the death of one contesting candidate there. Voters, especially newly registered young ones, are showing more interest in franchising their rights to elect better and committed leadership through the December 30 polls.
Deputy Inspector General for Rangpur Range Police Devdas Bhattacharya, Rangpur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Abdul Alim Mahmud, military and RAB officials, Regional Election Officer GM Sahatab Uddin, Returning Officers (Deputy Commissioners) and Superintends of Police from all eight districts and other officials concerned attended the meeting. The meeting discussed all aspects of holding the December 30 polls peacefully in a free, fair and transparent manner ensuring full proof security in 32 constituencies of Rangpur division. In Rangpur-3 (Sadar) seat, heavyweight candidate and Jatiya Party Chairman Hussein Muhammad Ershad is in advantageous position despite his absence here against his eight rival candidates including BNP candidate Rita Rahman.
In Rangpur-6 (Pirganj), heavyweight AL candidates Jatiya Sangshad Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury has remained much ahead against her five rival candidates including Saiful Islam of BNP.
In Rangpur-5 (Mithapukur), strong AL candidate HN Ashiqur Rahman is facing
five other candidates with a possibility of trilateral contest with Jatiya Party candidate Fakhruzzaman Jahangir and BNP candidate and Jamaat leader Golam Rabbani.
 In Rangpur-4 (Kawnia-Pirgachha), AL candidate Tipu Munshi is running much ahead in the race against his five rival candidates including Emdadul Haque Bharsha of BNP.
In Rangpur-1 (Gangachara), heavyweight JP candidate and State Minister for LGRD and Cooperatives Mashiur Rahman Ranga is in better position against his five contesting candidates with no possibility of any major contest there.
In Rangpur-2 seat, AL candidate Abul Kalam Md Ahsanul Haque Chowdhury Deuk is facing challenges from JP candidate Asaduzzaman Chowdhury Sablu, BNP candidate Mohammad Ali Sarker and six other candidates.
In Thakurgaon-1 (Sadar), a tough competition is expected between two heavyweight candidates of AL presidium member and former minister Ramesh Chandra Sen and Secretary General of BNP Mirja Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
In Nilphamari-2 (Sadar), heavyweight AL candidate and Cultural Affairs Minister Asaduzzaman Noor is in a convenient position against his three rival candidates including BNP candidate and Jamaat leader Moniruzzaman Mantu.
In Dinajpur-4 (Khansama-Chirirbandar), heavyweight AL candidate and Foreign Minister AHM Mahmood Ali is in better position against his six contesting candidates including Akhteruzzaman Mian of BNP.
In Dinajpur-5 ( Fulbari-Parbotipur), heavyweight AL candidate and Minister for Primary and Mass Education Advocate Mostafizur Rahman Fizar is running ahead against his five rival candidates including AZM Rezwanul Haque of BNP.
Talking to BSS, Rangpur Regional Election Officer GM Sahatab Uddin said a total of 207 candidates, including 196 of political parties and 11 independent, are contesting in the 32 parliamentary constituencies of eight districts under Rangpur division.
“A total of one crore 11 lakh 83 thousand and 289 voters, including 55 lakh 67 thousand and 820 males and 55 lakh 15 thousand and 469 females are expected to cast their votes at 4,494 polling centres in all constituencies in the division,” he said.
