A daylong solo exhibition of renowned Bangladeshi photographer Sanaul Haque was held at Diversity Plaza at Jackson Heights of New York recently.
Fifty photographs on the exodus of Rohingya people from Rakhine state of Myanmar to Cox’s Bazar in Bangladesh fleeing from the persecution of Myanmar military and their everyday life in refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar drew the attention of commoners in New York City.
Many of the photos were of children and families looking tired and struggling. Haque spent three months following and recording the journey of Rohingya people fleeing from Myanmar’s Rakhine State to Bangladesh’s Cox’s Bazar.
The first exhibition was held in September. New York State Assembly Member Catlina Cruz inaugurated the exhibition titled ‘Save the Rohingya People.’
Voice of America journalist Akbar Haider Kiran, journalist M Emran Ansari, Bangladeshi expatriate freedom fighter Abu Jafar Mahmud and Nehar Siddiqui were also present at the inaugural programme.
At the inaugural speech, New York state assembly member Catlina Cruz said that this atrocity and cruelty is difficult to express in words. She appreciated the initiatives’ of Sanaul and hoped that USA would take more schemes to save this community.
Sanaul said, “I had come here because UN Assembly will be here in New York and lots of foreign countries will be involved in this assembly. I want more people to see these pictures, and I think by doing this, I can help these people.”
“I tried my best to capture the precious moments of history. I hope UN and every country would work together to solve this problem,” he added.
The second exhibition was held at Jamaica, New York on September 30.
Since August 2017, more than 700,000 Rohingya people have fled from Myanmar, trying to get shelter in Bangladesh’s refugee camp which is the largest refugee camp in the world now, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.
Sanaul Haque is a renowned photographer of Bangladesh, who has covered wide ranges of issues including political upheavals, natural disasters, climate changes and many other national and international crises. Born in July 6, 1970 in Dhaka, Sanaul started journalism in 1991. He worked in several local newspapers including Daily Dinkal, the Independent, Janakantha and New Age. He left New Age as chief photo journalist in April 2018 to pursue other ambitions. During his career as freelance photographer and journalist spanning over two-and-half decade, Sanaul gained huge experience, which enriched his works.
His experiences include covering the exodus of Rohingya refugees from Myanmar to Bangladesh in 2017, a crisis that drew the attention globally. Father of two loving kids, Sanaul also covered many sport event including World Cup Cricket and host of bilateral series involving Bangladesh national cricket team.
He also teaches in different photography institutions as a guest lecturer. n
