Asian Games Football: Bangladesh to play Qatar today for a 2nd round berth
Bangladesh U-23 team will play Asian giant Qatar in their 3rd and last Group B match of the 18th Asian Games Men’s Football today at the Patriot Chandrabhaga Stadium in Bekasi, eastern part of Jakarta, with a hope to make a 2nd round berth.
The match will kick off 6 pm (Bangladesh Time).
On completion of two group matches of each team, Uzbekistan clearly dominated the Group B list to reach the 2nd round securing full 6 points with nine plus goals while Thailand followed them with two points with zero goal difference while Bangladesh and Qatar bagged one point each.
But Bangladesh (-3 goals) are enjoying an upper hand advantage with better goal difference than Qatar (-6 goals).
To qualify for the 2nd round of the Asian meet, Bangladesh (FIFA World Ranked 194) need at least a draw against Qatar (FIFA World Ranked 98). They will also have to wait for a 4-0 win for group leader Uzbekistan (FIFA World Ranked 95) against Thailand (FIFA World Ranked 122) on the same day.
If Bangladesh fail to qualify as the group runners-up from Group B after Uzbekistan , they have another outside chance to reach 2nd round of the meet as the best four 3rd teams of six groups.
Ahead of the match against Qatar, Bangladesh made a good practice session in Jakarta on Saturday.
Earlier, Bangladesh team keep their 2nd round hope alive forcing stronger and upper-ranked Thailand U-23 side to play 1-1 draw in their 2nd group match of the Games Men’s Football at the Pakansari Stadium in Cibinong, Bogor in Indonesia on Thursday last.
