63 pc of HSC examinees fail in Khagrachhari

At least 63.33 per cent students failed in this year’s Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) exams from Khagrachhari district.
Most of the students failed in English, Physics and ICT subjects, sources confirmed.
District administration sources said a total 7,256 students took part in this year’s HSC exams from 13 colleges in the district. Of them, a total of 4,595 failed in different subjects including English, Physic and ICT. Only 36.67 per cent student passed in the exam.
Highest 92.39 per cent students passed from Khagrachhari Cantonment School and College, while 77.36 per cent from Guimara College, 54.12 per cent from Khagrachhari Government Women’s College, 53.85 per cent from Panchhari Chenghi Saribala College, 47.80 per cent from Ramgorh Government College, 47.48 per cent from Khagrachhari Government College, 36.86 per cent from Matiranga Degree College, 22.36 per cent from Matiranga Green Hill College, 24.97 per cent from Manikchhari Giri Moitree Degree College, 27.50 per cent students from Mohalchhari College, 35.83 per cent from Dighinala Degree College and 14.90 per cent from Panchhari Degree College passed in the exam.
This correspondent talked with Khagrachhari Government College Principal Prof Shah Ahmed Nabi, Khagrachhari Women College Principal Professor Shah Alamgir, Dighinala Degree College Principal Montu Bikash Chakma, Panchhari Degree College Principal Samir Dutta Chakma and former principal of Khagrachhari Government College Dr Sudin Kumar Chakma, who identified 10 reasons behind the failure of the record 36.67 per cent students.
The reasons are: The student’s admitted at colleges with poor basic knowledge from primary and high school, shortage of expert teachers in various subjects like English, Physics and ICT, questions not prepared following standard method, good students enrol at good institutions in Dhaka or Chittagong, students and teachers not well acquainted with creative questions system, poor student participation in classes due to remoteness and financial constraint, shortage of education friendly environment and taking fewer classes due to different programmes round the year.
These educationists suggested eight points to recover from the situation, which include recruiting quality teachers at primary and high school level, filling up vacant posts of teachers including English, Physics and ICT, ensuring basic education for the students at primary and high school level and modern education facilities, starting modern education system, preparing questions with due system, ensuring students’ attendance in classes and ensuring proper role by both teachers and students.
