Call to take action against illegal gas connections

Parliamentary standing committee on the ministry for power, energy and mineral resources on Sunday recommended taking stern legal action against those officials and employees involved in giving illegal gas connections. The committee also recommended the ministry to place a detailed report in its next meeting about the existing number of actual consumers of gas, how the new connections are being given, number of illegal connections and what steps have so far been taken against illegal connections.
It recommended taking immediate steps to increase storage capacity of fuel oil for ensuring energy security as the demand of fuel oil is gradually increasing. It recommended the import of LNG to meet the demand of gas.
The committee suggested taking steps to reduce dependence on natural gas by setting up more coal-fired power plants in the country.
It also suggested ensuring proper use of hard rock and demands for it is on rise in the country.
Committee chairman Md Tajul Islam chaired the meeting while its members state minister for power, energy and mineral resources Nasrul Hamid, Md Atiur Rahman Atique, M Abdul Latif, Md Shibli Sadik and Nasima Ferdous attended.
Secretary of the ministry, Petrobangla chairman and high officials of the ministry and the Jatiya Sangsad were present at the meeting.
