Gayle, McCullum failed to shine in BPL
Local crowd who thronged the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium hoping to witness fireworks from the bat West Indies giant Chris Gayle and hard-hitting Kiwi Brendon McCullum were left totally disappointed as hard hitting duo failed to provide flying start for Rangpur Riders.
This duo opened an innings for the first time in the history of Bangladesh Premier League against Comilla Victorians but both Gayle and McCullum failed to contribute handsomely as Comilla Victorians recorded a 14 runs victory on yesterday over the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium.
This defeat left Rangpur at the rock bottom at points table while Comilla climbed to the second position with this win.
Rangpur chasing a moderate target of 154 runs one thought it should be a cake walk for Rangpur as Gayle and McCullum came out bat but both batsmen famous in the world cricket for their blazing knocks, cut a complete sorry figure, after losing these prized scalps Rangpur were at one stage reeling at 32 for four inside seven overs before eventually scoring 139 for 7 in 20 overs.
However among the Rangpur ruins it was English batsman Ravi Bopara, who top-scored with a run-a-ball 48, and Mohammad Mithun, who scored 39 as they posted added 67 runs for the fifth wicket to close the losing margin.
Whereas Comilla’s foreign signing Afghan sensation leg spinner Rashid Khan and local young off-spinner Mahedi Hasan produced brilliant bowling spells which saw Riders succumb to their wiles.
Mahedi opening the bowling finished a flattering figure of 15 for 2 from his four overs while the brilliant Rashid Khan looked unplayable to capture two wickets for 19 runs and these spells compounded the Rangpur Riders batting debacles.
