UNB, Dhaka :
The High Court on Tuesday relieved former Chief Election Commissioner Dr ATM Shamsul Huda of contempt of court charges.
An HC bench comprising Justice Kazi Reza-Ul Hoque and Justice ABM Altaf Hossain passed the order in the presence of Shamsul Huda, following an apology appeal by the leading English newspaper, The Daily Star, saying that its report
on Dr Huda’s remarks was not accurate.
The daily published a report, titled ‘No rule of law’, quoting the speech of the former CEC at a seminar arranged by the Centre for Policy Dialogue on May 17.
In its report, Daily Star quoted Dr Shamsul Huda as saying that all constitutional bodies, including the Election Commission, the Public Service Commission and the judiciary, have been politicised and incompetent people are being appointed there. On May 18, the same bench asked Dr ATM Shamsul Huda to appear before it on June 3 to explain his ‘derogatory’ remarks about the judiciary.
Shamsul Huda’s lawyer Dr. Kamal Hossain and adv Tamim Hossain Shawon were also present during the HC bench’s order.
