Heavy rain damages dried fishes at Dublarchar

In five chars in the East Sundarbans of Dublarchar area, dried fishes worth about Tk 20 lakh have been damaged as the fishermen could not dry fishes due to inclement weather for last couple of days.
Kamal Ahmed, General Secretary of Dubla Fishermen Group said, there are about 25 thousands fishermen and traders in Alorkole, Majherkilla, Meher Alir Char, Narikelbaria and Shelar Char of Sharonkhola range of the East Sundarbans who are engaged with dried fishes trading. They can not dry fishes for the last few days due to rough weather. As the sun was not seen in previous days, around 1000 mounds fishes of different species could not be dried. The fishes were damaged due to lack of sun. The approximate market price of the damaged fishes is taka 20 lakh. For being damaged thefishes fishermen and dried fish traders became puzzled.
Kamal further said, in spite of staying the fishing trawlers in adjacent to the sundarbans, but they have taken shelter at different safe places in different chars of sharonkhola range of the sundarbans. Besides, fishing was stopped in the Bay of Bengal due to inclement weather for the last few days. As the ocean is on the rise so fishing would not be possible in next few days until the sea becomes calm. As such the fishermen and the dried fishes traders are in a fix because their earning was stopped and this is why they are in deplorable condition.
Life leading of Dublarchar fishermen is different from others. The fishermen of the area have been conducting their lives amid keen struggle. They are compelled to endure different types o natural disasters. Fierce cyclone ‘Sidr’ snatched at least 400 lives of fishermen of this char.
It is mentionable here that around 6500 fishermen live in this char.
The main occupations of this char people are fishing and drying fishes.
