Gamblers beat 3 journos in Gazipur
GAZIPUR: Three journalists suffered severe injuries as a group of local miscreants allegedly beat them while gathering news on gambling at Shirirchala in Sadar upazila on Monday afternoon. The injured were identified as Azharul Hoque, Atikul Islam Amin and Abdullah Al Mamun, district correspondents of private television channels RTV, Mohona TV and Gazi TV respectively. The victims said a group of influential people had been operating an illegal gambling house and indecent dance show at Shirirchala. Officer-in-charge of Joydebpur Police Station Khandaker Rezail Hasan said some journalists went to Shirirchala in the afternoon to gather news on the illegal activities. When they tried to take footage, the miscreants swooped on them with machetes and sticks, leaving the three journalists injured. The hoodlums also snatched cameras, mobile phone sets and cash from the journalists, reports UNB.
Two held with 900 grams heroin in C’nawabganj

Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested two alleged drug peddlers with 900 grams of heroin from Amnura area in Chapainawabganj sadar upazila on Monday. The arrested persons were identified as Md. Matiar Rahman Faruk, 35, son of Md. Mofij Uddin and Md. Ashraful Islam, 35, son of late Saidur Rahman of Tanore upazila under Rajshahi district.On information, an operation team of elite force from Chapainawabganj camp raided at the area and held them with the heroin. During primary interrogation, the arrested persons admitted their involvement in illegal drug trading, the RAB sources said.

Workshop on ways to raise farm output held in Sylhet

Agriculture scientists, farmers and officials at a regional workshop in Sylhet laid emphasis on raising farm production through increasing irrigation facilities, raising the use of quality seeds and by bringing arable lands under cultivation in the division, which had been far behind in the sector for ages. DAE additional director, Sylhet Division, Krishna Chandra Hore attended the workshop titled ‘Raising crop intensification in Sylhet region’ as the chief guest. DAE deputy director, Moulvibazar, Md Shahjahan presided over the day-long event at the Sylhet Zila Parishad Sunday. DAE’s Deputy Directors of Sylhet Md. Abul Hashem, Habiganj Md. Shah Alam and Md. Zahedul Haque of Sunamganj, Divisional office Deputy Director Dr. Mamun Ur Rashid, Sylhet district Training Officer Salah Uddin Ahmed, On firm Research Division’s senior Scientific officer Mahmudul Islam Nazrul, Soil Resource Development Institute’s Md. Shafiquzzaman and farmer Abul Bashar also addressed the workshop among others.
Two held with 2-Kg hemp in Joypurhat
JOYPURHAT :A team of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in an anti-drug drive detained two alleged drug traders with two-kg of hemp from near the Tulsiganga Bridge in Khetlal upazila yesterday night.The arrestees were Jewel Rana, 35, son of Khajamuddin and Saidul Islam, 25, son of Abul Kashem of Akkelpur upazila of Joypurhat district, RAB sources said.On information, a team of elite force led by assistant director of RAB Joypurhat Camp, Ashiqur Rahman, conducted the raid in the area and arrested two alleged drug traders with 2-kg hemp.During the drive, the team also seized a motorcycle and two mobile sets from them.A case was recorded with Khetlal Police Station under the Anti-Narcotics Control Act, the RAB sources added, reports BSS.
Pabna Shibir leader held
PABNA: Police arrested district Islami Chhatra Shibir secretary Badiuzzaman from Manohorpur in Sadar upazila on Monday in connection with vandalism and sabotage cases.
Officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station Abdullah Al Hasan said tipped off, a team of police conducted a raid on Badiuzzaman’s house in the area and arrested him at about 8:30pm. The Shibir leader was accused in vandalism and sabotage cases, the OC added, reports UNB.
Minor boy drowns in Benapole
BENAPOLE: A minor boy drowned after falling in a water-filled hole at Gazipur village of Abhoynagar upazila in the district town on Tuesday morning.
The deceased was identified as Jisan, 2, son of Mohiuddin Bihari, a resident of the village.
Victim’s father Mohiuddin said Jishan slipped into the hole while playing nearby in the morning.
After a frantic search, the body was recovered from the hole, reports UNB.
