New Zealand international Storm Roux will undergo surgery Monday after suffering a horrific series of injuries in a freak fall which ended his A-League season.
The Central Coast Mariners defender was left writhing in agony after breaking his fibula, damaging his ankle and dislocating his shoulder in one turn of his body, untouched by any other player, while playing Melbourne City on Sunday.
It took paramedics and club medical staff over 10 minutes to remove him from the field in Melbourne after his attempted blocking of a shot that went horribly wrong.
Roux spun to try to block an attempt on goal, only to snap his right fibula as his leg landed awkwardly, and dislocate his shoulder as he crashed to the turf.
“Roux stayed in Melbourne overnight with club physiotherapist Andrew Nealon and will return to Sydney this morning for immediate surgery on this right leg,” the club said.
The Mariners were leading 1-0 at the time but the upsetting circumstances of Roux’s injuries had a knock-on effect for his distraught team-mates as they collapsed to a 4-1 defeat.
